Car rental discount codes and rental car coupons are widely available. You may belong to an associaton or program that offers rental car discount codes and coupons for rental cars that you’re not even aware of. Do you belong to an auto club or frequent flyer program? There are many professional assocations that offer car rental discount codes for their members, as well. Click here to go directly to the Discount Codes page ; here you’ll find a list of rental car discount codes for 8 major car rental companies.

Endorsed by The Coupon Mom on Good Morning America Look for rental car coupons in the yellow pages, in magazines and online. The best source of coupons that I saw during my 8 years as a reservation agent, were the Entertainment Book coupons.

The Entertainment Book has rental car discount codes for members and rental car coupons for most of the major car rental companies in cities across the United States and Canada.

We’ll talk more about coupons for rental cars a little further down the page.

First, let’s talk discounts!!

Many membership programs have partnerships with car rental companies; they provide rental car discounts to their members as a membership reward or membership benefit.

If you are calling a car rental company directly, just ask if there are rental car discounts with that program or association. The agents will be able to access the correct discount code and quote you a rate.

If you are searching for car rental rates on the internet, you can get the specific discount number from the program that you belong to from that program’s website for membership rewards. Often, you can then link directly to the rental company you prefer and the correct car rental discount code will autofill in the proper place. You can also click here, for listings of over 350 Car Rental Discount Codes

The company you work for may already have a discount affiliation with one or more car rental companies. Check with your Human Resources manager for information on possible car rental discount coupons and discount codes or with a reservation agent for the car rental company you choose.

Most rental agencies offer rental car discounts and programs for small businesses and those who are self employed, with discounts, coupons and specials. You can call direct to the car rental company to sign up. As well, most car rental websites will also offer a link for you to apply for a corporate or business account. In most cases, you will receive a car rental discount code that you can use immediately. Check here, for information on Business Car Rentals (Programs and Benefits)

You may also want to check out Government Car Rental (Programs and Benefits), for government employees and military personnel.

If you are calling a reservation line and you are not a member of an association and don’t have a coupon, ask the reservation agent if there are any "specials" that day, or a "special rate" they can give you. Most companies empower their agents to discount a rate (they have car rental discount codes they can use).. but only if you ask!

Now... back to Coupons!

Car Rental Discount Coupons are a car renters’best friend. It’s money in your pocket. Make sure the coupon you want to use fits your rental, or make the rental fit the coupon if that would be of more value. You can find Car Rental Discount Coupons online, in magazines, newspapers and through Coupon Books, like the Entertainment Book http://img193.imageshack.us/img193/1174/54771544.gif.

Keep your rental car coupons in one place and grab them before you call or go online to book.

Make sure that you meet the terms and conditions on the coupon. Terms and conditions are generally on the back, in really small print!!

Get out your magnifying glass!

Make sure that the coupon has not expired. The rental must start before the date of expiration on the coupon. Also, check to verify that the location you want to rent from participates. Is it for airport rentals only? Does it work in other countries?

Coupons for rental cars fall into three basic cateogories:

Money Off

Free Day(s)

Free Upgrades

Bonus Miles

Daily Charges

For rental cars, you are charged per day. The car rental company will either charge you for a calendar day or a 24 hour day. There is a difference between the two that will certainly affect your search for cheap car rental rates.

Calendar day pricing is when you are charged a per day charge for each day, regardless of pick up and drop off time. For example: pick up Feb 5th at 9am and returning Feb 10th at 9am would be charged as a 6 day rental. You could return anytime on the 10th for the same fee.

Using this same example, 24 hour day pricing would only be charged as a 5 day rental. But, if you returned later than 9am on the 10th, you would be charged for the 6 days instead of 5 days. Keep this in mind when setting up your pickup and return time. Keep them the same, for the best rate possible.

Timing is everything!

When you’re looking for cheap car rental rates, remember that car rental pricing is like airline pricing – if you travel at off-peak times (when there is not a lot of travelling going on)or make a reservation seven or more days in advance, you often can get discount car rental rates. Last minute rentals and travelling at peak times (like holidays) will generally cost you more.

If you are planning a family vacation, cheap car rental rates are just one of the items you will be looking at. A great vacation takes lots of planning. You can get some really helpful information for your next trip or family vacation at http://www.greatfamilyvacationtips.com to get family vacation tips on planning, travel, adventure, all inclusives and making it affordable!

Like airfare pricing – car rental prices change depending on car availability, the popularity of the location and other factors. Car rental companies adjust their pricing on a sometimes minute-by-minute basis to remain competitive with other companies.

Rental car companies rent the largest portion of their car fleet during Monday-through- Friday business travel. Car prices will be higher then. So, generally speaking, the cheap car rental rates on cars are found on weekends when the demand for some types of cars isn’t as high. This works in reverse for the larger vehicles or specialty vehicles. For example, you can usually get rental car discounts on rates, on Minivans, SUV’s and convertibles if you are renting Monday through Friday. These types of vehicles get more expensive on the weekends, when they are more in demand.

Taking Advantage of Car Rental Specials

Unless there are advertised car rental specials, there generally isn’t one set rate for a particular kind of vehicle, but rather a range of prices depending on the length and dates of your reservation, the type of vehicle you rent and the location you rent from.

Even with the best rental car deals, the advertised rate usually applies to a limited supply of cars or limited locations. Click her for more Tips on finding Car Rental Deals

When you see a great rate for the vehicle you want – RESERVE IT RIGHT AWAY – it may not be available later! Unless the vehicle has cancellation or no show policy, you can cancel at any time, without penalty.

Compare, Compare, Compare!

I suggest that you go to a booking site and check your city, dates, times and vehicle size to find which company has the best rates for cheap car rentals. If you don’t have to give your credit card number, book the car. Then, go to that particular company’s website and see if you can get a cheaper rate on the same vehicle using a car rental discount code or a car rental special from the site. Car rental specials are almost constantly advertised on car rental websites, especially for certain kinds of rentals. Learn how to take advantage of them! Get Tips to Save Money on.... Weekend Car Rentals , Weekly Car Rentals , One Way Car Rentals and Long Term Rentals

If you find a cheaper rate, book it and then go back and cancel the reservation that you made on the booking site.

Check with your rental company to find out what qualifies as a weekend rental. If the rental company starts their weekend rates at noon, you’ll pay a lot more if you want to pick it up at 10am! Most weekend rates end at close of business or midnight on Mondays. Keep in mind that if the Monday is a holiday and you want to keep the vehicle until sometime on Tuesday, you will probably pay substantially more!

Most companies will tell you that the longer you keep your vehicle, the better per day price you’ll get. Keep in mind that the price per day is relative. If you are taking any optional coverages, renting a car seat, have additional driver fees, etc... those extra per day costs will add up and the longer rental may not give you cheap car rates after all!

Need a cheap car rental rate for a monthly car rental? If you need a vehicle for approximately a month, make sure to check the difference between 28 days (4 weeks) and 29-31 days. Sometimes you pay a significant amount more for those extra few days! It can work the opposite too! Sometimes a 27 day rate is higher than a 31 day rate. When you’re looking for cheap car rental rates, you need to compare all your options!

Discount Car Rental Rates

Alway try to use some form of discount to get cheap car rental rates. You would be surprised at how many organizations, companies and associations have discounts with many, if not all, rental car companies. Click here for a list of car rental discount codes for 8 car rental companies.

Often rental reservation agents are impowered to give you a generic discount if you have none of your own. Often you must ask! Check to see if there is a "special rate" or any "specials" that they can give you.

If you’ve got a rental car coupon that works for your rental, use it! Every dollar counts when looking for cheap car rentals.

Discount Car Rental Rate Advice

For rental cars, you are charged per day. Check to see if the company you want to rent from charges by a calendar day or a 24 hour day. This can definitely affect your rate.

When you see a great rate for the vehicle you want – RESERVE IT RIGHT AWAY – it may not be available later!

Car Rental Advice for Coupons

Most rental car coupons have a discount code associated with them as well. Rental car discounts and coupons go together! Make the most of them!

Make sure that you meet the terms and conditions on the coupon. Terms and conditions are generally on the back, in really small print!!

When using an upgrade coupon, the upgrade is not guaranteed. If a larger car is what you need, you would be better off to use a money off coupon for the size that you require.

Car Rental Advice for One Way Car Rentals

You pay more for a car rental one-way on a daily basis. If you can pick up and drop off in one day, you’ll only being paying the higher rate for that day. It may be cheaper to pick up a new vehicle for the remainder of your rental because that car would be rented and returned to the same location!

You can get cheaper one way car rentals a few times of year (usually spring and winter) when most car rental companies are moving their fleet from one area of the country to another.

Car Rental Advice for Reservations

Before you start to check prices on a car rental, have your location information, discount information, coupon and dates and times ready! This will save you time and effort!

Make sure to check rates at different locations in the city you want to rent in. Airport fees can add a lot to your rental rate; if your pick up is flexible, you may be able to save some money.

Car Rental Advice on buying Insurance

If you decline LDW at the rental counter and rely on your own insurance, you probably would be responsible for paying your usual deductible. Also, a loss-of-use fee is not normally covered by personal auto insurance policies. And, personal auto policies that extend collision coverage to a rental car may only provide a coverage limit equal to the value of your own vehicle. If the value of your personal vehicle is less than that of the rental vehicle, you could still incur some damage responsibility.

You may already have collision coverage for a rental car through your credit card.

Car Rental Advice for Credit Cards

If a car rental company accepts your debit or cheque card make sure to check about any additional information that would be required. Most companies that accept a debit card will also require a credit check at the rental counter and a larger deposit than would be required with a regular credit card. Call your rental location directly for information on what the credit check entails. There may also be age restrictions even if the company accepts debit cards.

Some car rental locations do not accept debit cards at time of rental to release the vehicle, but do accept debit cards for payment when you return the vehicle.

Car Rental Advice on Additional Drivers

Most car rental companies will rent to a person who is disabled and who does not possess a driver’s license. The renter must show that they are able to be personally and financially responsible for the rental vehicle and must use their own credit car to rent. The driver that they sign on must meet the age and drivers license requirement of the rental car company.

Note: There are no fees for an additional driver for a disabled renter. Click here for more information on Car Rentals for Persons With Disabilities

Even if you rent a car, but never drive it, you are automatically considered the primary operator of the rental vehicle. All additional drivers must be approved by the rental company.

Car Rental Advice on Cancellations

Please be careful when booking a prepaid reservation through a website like Hotwire or Priceline. These are great sites, where you can get great deals, but the reservations that you book and pay for in advance, may be non-cancellable, non-modifiable and non-refundable. Make sure you are aware of these stipulations!

International Car Rental Advice & Tips

It is recommended that you carry an International Driving Permit (IDP)for most international rentals. An IDP is written in 10 languages and serves as an officially recognized translation of your local driving license in over 150 participating members of the United Nations.

When you are checking rates, if your international rental price quote is presented in U.S. or Canadian dollars, keep in mind that the rental location will charge the equivalent in local currency.

Make sure you know the rules of the road where you are renting... you may be required to drive on the left in some countries.

Tips on car rental discount codes, rental car coupons, getting a cheap car rental rate and the best rental car deals are important when looking for discounted rental cars. The whole reason that I created this website was to try and give people a place to find all the car rental tips that they need, the advice that I think they should know, and the answers to their questions about renting a car... all in one place!
I’ve narrowed all the advice and car rental tips from this whole website down to what I think are the 10 most important things that you need to do when you book a rental car.

These are my personal Top 10 Car Rental Tips!

      1. Make an Advanced Booking

If you can reserve your rental a week or more in advance, you will often get the best rental car rates. Reserving or renting at the last minute and booking during heavy travel times (like holidays) will generally cost you more, and you will also have less vehicle options as many of the cars will already be booked.

When you see a good price for the rental you want – RESERVE IT THEN – it may not be available the next time you check.

Click here for tips on reservations.

      2. Find a Car Rental Discount Code or Rental Car Coupon

Many programs and associations (travel clubs, auto clubs, professional associations, etc) offer car rental discounts as part of their rewards or benefits to members. You can contact the association direct or check their website for member benefits for car rental. I’ve compiled a list of car rental discount codes for 8 major car rental companies. Find a code to use on your next rental!

You may be able to find rental car coupons or specials on car rental company websites. Make sure to check the terms and conditions of these specials to see if they work for your rental. Some discount auto rentals from specials may not be able to be used in conjunction with discount codes, so make sure to check both options, to see which will give you a better price.
Check my Car Rental Tips for the following types of rentals:

Tips to Save Money on Weekly Car Rentals

Tips to Save Money on One Way Car Rentals

Tips to Save Money on Monthly Car Rentals

Getting rental car discounts is top priority, and you don’t always need car rental codes or rental car coupons. There are several other car rental tips that will help to save you money. Click here for the Top 5 ways to get discounted rental cars.

      3. Size makes a Difference

If you are looking for more car rental tips to save money, book only the size of vehicle that you need to meet your basic requirements. Depending upon availability, you may be able to get a free upgrade at the time of pickup. Many car rental companies overbook their smaller sizes, so if you’re looking for a slightly larger vehicle, ask at the car rental counter if there are any free car rental upgrades available.

      4. The Best Car Rental Rates are Usually found on Weekends

The largest percentage of car rental fleets are rented from Monday-through- Friday for business travel. Leisure travelers can often find better discount auto rentals on weekends when the demand for some types of cars isn’t as high. Small to large size cars will be cheaper on the weekends, but SUV’s, minivans and specialty vehicles will usually be more expensive. An exception to the lower-rates-on-weekends rule of thumb, would be holiday weekends. If you don’t book far enough in advance, holiday weekend rentals can be very, very expensive.

Tips to Save Money on Weekend Car Rentals

      5. Fill up the Tank, even if you only Drive a Little Bit

Most car rental companies charge a special surcharge or fee, if you drive the vehicle under a certain number of miles. The number of miles may vary from company to company, so make sure to check with the car rental location that you are renting from. If you drive the rental car under 100 miles, make sure to keep your gas receipt so that you can request a waiver of the automatic fuel surcharge, if it is applied. Most car rental companies will also offer some kind of prepaid fuel option that you can take if you don’t want to have to fill up the tank before you return the car.

      6. Always get a Booking Number or Email Copy of your Reservation

If you reserve your rental over the phone, make sure to get a reservation number or confirmation number and an email confirmation, if available. When you reserve your rental car online, make sure to record your confirmation number as back up until your email arrives. Bring a printed copy of your reservation with you, if you can. You may never have to show it, but you’re better having having it in case there is a problem.

      7. Check your Options about Rental Car Insurance

Before you go to the rental counter, be sure to do some research on what you will need for coverage for the rental car. It’s important to know your options, before accepting or declining the various coverages offered at the car rental counter. Check your personal auto insurance policy for car rental coverage as well as your credit card to see if you have any coverages that extend to or cover your rental. Check carefully to make sure that any coverage that you may have would be adequate for your particular rental. These insurance car rental tips may save you money if you don’t need to purchase any optional coverages, but only if you are already sufficiently covered for the rental vehicle.

Click here, for more information about car rental insurance.

      8. Compare Rates on Discount Auto Rentals

Although sometimes it can seem that all car rental rates are about the same, keep in mind that car companies keep track of each others prices in order to be competitive.

The easiest way to quickly compare rates for several car rental companies, is to go to a booking site and check your city, dates, times and vehicle size to find which company has the cheapest rate. You can Find the Best Car Rental Rates in Top Destinations http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/2949/40691609.gif by comparing rates using Travelocity, for example.

If the rates seems reasonable and you don’t have to give your credit card number, book the car. Then, go to that particular company’s website, directly, and see if you can get better cheap car rental rate on the same vehicle using car rental discount codes or a special from the site.

If you find a cheaper rate, book it and then go back and cancel the reservation that you made on the booking site.

      9. Pick up and Return the Rental Car at the Same Time of Day

Most car rental companies charge based on 24 hour days, starting at the exact time when you pick up your car. (Not the time that you said you would pick it up!) It is rare now to get much of a grace period for returning the vehicle, although some car rental companies will offer a 29 minute grace period. Pick up and return at or by the same time of day to keep your price down and avoid being charged for an extra day. Make sure to check at the rental counter, to see if there is a grace period for returns, in case you are late.

      10. Check Back, after you’ve made a Reservation

If you book a car rental reservation 3 weeks or more in advance, call or check online each week before the pick up date, to see if the rates of your rental have gone down since you booked it. You may also be able to find last minute car rental deals if you check regularly up until your pick up date.

Online, you can try to either modify your reservation to the lower rate (try changing your pick up time by a couple of minutes) or book a new car at the lower rate. If you successfully book the lower rate, make sure to go back and cancel your original booking.

If you made your reservation over the phone, call periodically and provide your confirmation number, to check if the rates for your reservation have gone down. If the agent cannot modify the reservation to the lower rate, they will be able to book you a new reservation at the cheaper price.
